SOUTH AFRICAN POLICE DESTROY FIREARMS

The North West branch of the South African Police Service destroyed more than 900 illegal and discarded firearms at a metal yard in the town of Brits. The firearms were all confiscated by the SAPS in the province in the months leading up to the day.

The firearms were crushed in a metal mill and then the firearms that still made it through the mill was put aside and then cut in pieces using a blow-torch. A few stray rounds of ammunition was found in the firearms and we were standing around making jokes that it would be quite funny should one of the rounds go off.

Unfortunately exactly that happened and the round hit a police officer in the thigh. He was taken to hospital in the back of a police vehicle and was not in and life threatening danger.

I loved how the photos came out.
