Mamelodi Disaster Aftermath Day 1

Day After The Flood:

On Monday morning the 19th of August a waterpipe burst in the informal township of Phumolong in Mamelodi, South Africa. The ensuing flood rose to 50cm high in some places and affected about a 1000 households and claimed the lives of a baby and a toddler.

See my previous post on the day of the disaster at:

The day after the initial flood I returned to the area with Alet Pretorius, Chief Photographer at Photo24 in Pretoria and this is what we captured.

Men surround the hole where the waterpipe initially burst.

A car is covered with debris close to the spot where the waterpipe burst.

School books that was soaked in water in the flood is left outside to dry out.

Residents were moved to a community centre in Mamelodi where they were provided food and a place to sleep.

A man was saved out of the rushing water by a neighbour and shows some of his numerous scars.
