On Monday morning the 19th of August a waterpipe burst in the informal township of Phumolong in Mamelodi, South Africa. The ensuing flood rose to 50cm high in some places and affected about a 1000 households and claimed the lives of a baby and a toddler.

The day after the initial flood I returned to the area with Alet Pretorius, Chief Photographer at Photo24 in Pretoria and this is what we captured.

Residents were moved to a community centre in Mamelodi where they were provided food and a place to sleep. |
